Seismic repairs continue on Highway 36 near Fredonyer

UPDATE: On Feb. 20, the California Department of Transportation reported that motorists should plan for 24/7 one-way traffic control with up to 25-minute delays in the area. Stop signs and signals will be added with motorists required to stop and then travel slowly through the area.

The California Department of Transportation District 2 and Tullis Inc. report they are continuing pavement repairs and addressing several slides on westbound shoulders on State Route 36, east of Fredonyer Summit in Lassen County, due to seismic activity. Highway 36 is an access route that connects northern Plumas County with Susanville.

Pavement conditions are unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles and extreme caution in this area is advised, says Caltrans. The project involves grinding and smoothing pavement over various fault lines and conducting geological and survey investigations to best determine a more comprehensive, long-term fix for the area.

Motorists should plan for 24/7 one-way traffic control with delays of up to 15 minutes in the area. If conditions worsen, stop signs may be added, requiring motorists to stop and then travel slowly through the area. Under pilot car control, speeds are reduced to no more than 25 miles per hour in the project area, with a 15 miles per hour maximum speed in areas where pavement is removed.

Caltrans urges motorists to slow down and drive carefully in and around construction areas, follow speed limit reductions in place, and allot extra time for delays. This area is subject to change at any time due to inclement weather or continued slide activity.

Up-to-date information on highway projects is available on Caltrans social media and on the District 2 webpage. The public can also call 530-225-3426 during working hours or send an email to [email protected]. Updated highway conditions for California can be found on QuickMap and on One-Stop-Shop for the Western United States. More information about transportation and other infrastructure projects funded with state and federal investments is available at Build.gov.ca.
