Boyles Ravine prescribed burn scheduled for Sunday March 2

The Plumas County Fire Safe Council, in cooperation with the Terra Fuego Resource Foundation, announces that a prescribed burn is planned for Sunday March 2, 2025 at the American Valley Community Services District’s Boyles Ravine property outside Quincy. The burn is expected to last several days, weather permitting. The council reports that atmospheric conditions have been and will continue to be monitored, in order to minimize smoke and ensure safe containment.

The pile burn is part of ongoing efforts to reduce wildfire risk for residents of downtown Quincy and greater American Valley by addressing years of accumulated forest debris, organizers report.

“While this future burn may result in significant smoke in the area for several days, it’s important to note that these beneficial fires are a proactive approach to reduce future wildfire risks,” said the council. “By managing the landscape carefully seasonally with prescribed fire, we can help protect our community from wildfires come summer.”

Terra Fuego’s director, Bill Jacks, will lead the effort. Personnel from the Quincy Volunteer Fire Department, CAL FIRE and the Plumas Underburn Cooperative will also be on hand. Plumas Fire Safe Council will have a booth near the burn site to answer community questions.

Smoke is anticipated to be visible in Quincy and surrounding areas for about two days during the burn, and possibly for as long as five days, while the mop up process is ongoing. For residents sensitive to smoke, a limited quantity of household air purifiers are available to borrow from the Plumas Underburn Cooperative at this link.
