For a long time, the trashy garbage cans on Quincy’s downtown sidewalks bothered Quincy resident Karen Kleven, said the Rotary Club of Quincy. She wanted to see them replaced but did not know how to go about it.
As a Rotarian, Kleven knew that the club has long embraced challenging community service projects. She also knew that Rotary still had PG&E settlement funds from the Dixie Fire. Kleven appealed to the Rotary board of directors, which approved $6,000 for the Quincy downtown trash can replacement project. Those funds covered the cost and shipping of five forest green metal cans.

Kleven also approached Waste Management’s Jason Choate, who empties the downtown cans, asking his advice on which cans were the easiest to empty each week. The assembly of the old cans made them impossible to empty. Choate made suggestions and those new models were ordered.
Choate agreed to dispose of the old cans Feb. 21 as several Rotarians wheeled out the shiny new trash cans to replace the old ones.
