The Plumas Community Hospice training workshop for volunteers held, Feb. 22 at the Quincy branch of the Plumas County Library, brought together a dedicated group of community members eager to learn more about Hospice services available in our community and to make a difference in the lives of hospice patients and their families.
Led by experienced Hospice professional Kate McDonald, RN, a hospice nurse with over 30 years of experience, the training covered such topics as the difference between a Medicare-certified hospice and a volunteer hospice; palliative care vs hospice care; and next steps in becoming a volunteer with Plumas Community Hospice.
The positive feedback received underscores the impact of the training, reinforcing the vital role volunteers play in hospice care. One participant commented that the training will be a good foundation for becoming a volunteer, and that they are looking forward to learning from Plumas Community Hospice’s community of patients.
Diego Lazano, of Spanish Peak Productions, recorded the February training. Plumas Hospice plans to utilize the video as a training module.
“The professionalism of Diego’s recording, paired with Kate McDonald’s RN hospice expertise, will allow us to train many new volunteers moving forward,” said Plumas Community Hospice Director Susan DeLano. “However, no classroom-style training can replace being in and learning from our community. “It’s all about boots-on-the-ground learning.”
