The University of Nevada Press announces the March 25 publication of “York’s Ride: A Novel of Old California” by Michael Dennis Cassity, ISBN: 978-1-64779-183-4. Taylorsville serves as the setting for this historical coming-of-age story.
In 1914, while the world is preoccupied with The Great War, a quieter story unfolds in the remote mountains near Taylorsville. Twelve-year-old Jim moves to his uncle and aunt’s ranch in Taylorsville, where he befriends York, a Maidu boy, and learns the myths of Blind Charlie, a revered elder.
At the heart of their adventures is Meshuga, a legendary stallion — part mustang, part Percheron — whose strength makes him the stuff of folklore. When York, Meshuga’s caretaker, dies unexpectedly, Jim takes on the responsibility of the great black horse, stepping into the role York always believed was his destiny. As they prepare to compete in a grueling long-distance race against the nation’s best Arabian horses, Jim embraces the challenge, fulfilling the prophecy of his friend.
The publisher describes “York’s Ride” as a richly detailed historical coming-of-age novel that weaves together family, friendship and the spirit of the Old West.
Michael Dennis Cassity was named 1988 California Educator of the Year and was also the recipient of the 2001 Charles Hayward Award for Community Colleges. He is the author of “What Happens Next: Celebrating Stories with Children.” Cassity taught a full range of community college English courses, specializing in creative writing, children’s literature and environmental literature.
