Trojans walk in nailbiter against Chester Volcanoes

The Quincy Trojan varsity softball team reports it took its March 25 game in dramatic fashion, with a 4-3 victory over the Chester Volcanoes.

A single by Jenna Peay put the Quincy Trojans on the board in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fifth inning, the Volcanoes went back into the lead after Quincy committed an error. Chester’s Hailey Delong laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Sarah Branch singled to right field; each scored one run. Quincy tied the game in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a walk by Jemma Trueblood and a double by Hana Hostetter. The game was tied at three in the bottom of the seventh when Quincy’s Addison Gay singled, scoring the game-winning run. 

Branch and Maude Juska each collected one hit for Chester. Branch and Delong each drove in one run for the Volcanoes. Chester had a strong eye at the plate, piling up six walks for the game. Jenna Schlueter and Nancy Christianson led the team with two free passes each.

Gay and Peay were a force together in the Quincy lineup, each collecting two hits while batting back to back. Hostetter, Gay and Peay each drove in one run for the Trojans. Peay stole three of Quincy’s four stolen bases.

Quincy’s winning pitcher, Trueblood, struck out 13 batters on the day, only giving up one hit and three runs over seven innings while walking six.

Chester pitcher Jenna Schlueter surrendered seven hits and four runs (three earned) over six and one-third innings, striking out six and walking two.
