The Plumas County Fire Safe Council reports an inaugural Go-Bag Challenge for the community. “As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time for all of us to start thinking about wildfire preparedness — and what we can do now to get ready,” said Amber Hughes, rural community outreach coordinator and Firewise liaison.
The challenge encourages families to get ready by building their personal go bags and tracking their progress with PCFSC’s new “Pack, Prepare, and Stay Wildfire Aware Discovery Book,” which became available May 1.
A go bag is a special backpack filled with everything family members might need if they have to leave home quickly. “This hands-on activity is a fun way for families and kids to pack their go bag, create a family plan and get familiar with wildfire preparedness — so when the time comes, everyone knows exactly what to do,” said Hughes.
Here’s how to join the challenge:
- Pick up a PCFSC go bag challenge activity book at 420 N. Mill Creek Road, at participating local businesses or by downloading online.
- Follow the step-by-step directions.
- Form a team with family or friends.
- Pack the go bag with all the essentials — either at home or at the May 17 Wildfire Preparedness & Children’s Fair.
- Complete the steps in the activity book.
- Submit an entry for a chance to win prizes.
Families can complete the Go-Bag Challenge at home and submit online throughout the month of May. In-person go bag building and challenge activities will also be provided at the Wildfire Preparedness & Children’s Fair between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
