Lost Sierra Food Project hosts volunteer orientation

Lost Sierra Food Project announces it is welcoming new and returning volunteers to Rugged Roots Farm on Thursday, May 22, at 5 p.m. for a volunteer orientation and to kick off the summer farm season. Organizers say the one-hour meeting with LSFP staff will showcase volunteer opportunities and ways for the public to engage with the nonprofit farm. No previous farm experience is required to volunteer with the group, whose mission includes local food access and agriculture education for all ages.

LSFP’s production farm, Rugged Roots, is located at 501 Crescent St. in Quincy, across from Gansner Airfield. The volunteer orientation will include light snacks and refreshments and an opportunity to tour the farm and ask questions.

LSFP reports that in 2024 volunteers contributed over 900 hours of work on various projects including planting, weeding, harvesting, farm maintenance and event support. LSFP also reports that the goal of its volunteer program is to create safe, hands-on learning opportunities, to connect people to local food and to cultivate community.

This year, LSFP’s on-farm volunteer day will be Wednesday mornings starting June 4 at 8 a.m. In addition, the group seeks support for its annual events including Dancing in the Dirt on June 17 and the October Pumpkin Patch.
