Angler confirmed dead during Lake Almanor event

Bass Angler Magazine reports with profound sorrow that the BAM Tournament Trail has confirmed the passing of kayak angler Ryon Mora, 38, during the BAM Kayak Series event held at Lake Almanor on May 17.

The day began like any other tournament morning, under cloudy skies and a light 3–4 mph breeze. At 6:37 a.m., BAM Tournament Director Michael Bray received an urgent call reporting an unmanned kayak on the lake. BAM staff, including CEO Mark Lassagne, immediately responded to the GPS location provided and located Ryon Mora in the water at approximately 6:42 a.m.

Mora, who was wearing his personal flotation device, was quickly pulled into a BAM media boat and found unresponsive. 911 was called immediately, and CPR was initiated while en route to meet emergency responders. Paramedics were met at a nearby dock at approximately 6:47 a.m. and worked tirelessly for over 45 minutes to revive Mora. Despite their efforts, he could not be resuscitated.

The cause of death is currently under investigation by the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office. In response to the tragic loss, the event was immediately canceled.

“Ryon was a respected competitor, fellow sportsman and beloved friend to many in the kayak fishing community,” said BAM. “He took all proper safety precautions and was participating in a sanctioned event. This heartbreaking incident is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the outdoors.”

The entire BAM family extends its deepest condolences to Mora’s loved ones. BAM staff asks that the community join them in keeping his family in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
