Boater Card required for operators of motorized vessels

With summer holidays around the corner‚ many families will be heading out to enjoy California’s beautiful lakes and rivers, points out the Office of Sen. Megan Dahle. Staff report an important update to be aware of before launching: Starting Jan. 1‚ California law requires all motorized vessel operators to complete a boating safety course and obtain a California Boater Card. More information and a list of approved courses are available at CaliforniaBoaterCard.com.

“While I have concerns about yet another mandate placed on responsible Californians — many of whom have safely operated boats for decades without incident — this requirement may help cut down on property damage and unsafe behavior‚ especially during peak summer months,” said Dahle.

As summer approaches‚ Dahle encourages everyone to keep these “safety seven” tips in mind before heading out on the water:

  • Wear a life jacket. Choose one that fits properly and is Coast Guard approved — especially for children and teens.
  • Take a boating safety class. This is part of the new Boater Card requirements.
  • Carry required safety gear. Life jackets‚ fire extinguishers‚ navigation lights and proper ventilation are all essential.
  • Use the engine cut-off switch. It could save a boater’s life in the case of falling overboard.
  • File a float plan. Tell someone the boat’s destination‚ who’s on board and the return time.
  • Check conditions. Monitor weather and water forecasts before and during the trip.
  • Boat sober. Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time — don’t take the risk.

More information is available from the California Department of Parks’ boating and waterways page.
