P-CREW gears up for season of forestry, watershed work

Sierra Institute for Community and Environment announces that its Plumas Conservation, Restoration and Education in Watersheds youth corps is gearing up for two five-week work sessions in Plumas and Lassen counties starting June 16.

P-CREW is designed as a “pathway to profession” that guides future land stewards in engaging in critical forest and watershed restoration efforts, said Sierra Institute. Some of the work P-CREW members conduct includes forest thinning, invasive species removal and trail maintenance and building.

“Every hand helps when it comes to protecting our communities, and P-CREW has been hard at work for nearly ten years,” said Sierra Institute. “Reducing the buildup of dry, flammable material in our forests provides firefighters with safer working conditions and promotes beneficial fire on our landscapes.”

In the past three years alone, P-CREW workers have:

  • Installed more than 3 miles of fencing
  • Maintained or built 11.4 miles of trail
  • Removed 95,220 invasive species
  • Cleared 206 trees
  • Felled 418 trees
  • Created 227 burn piles
  • Built 29 rock cribs
  • Constructed 10 deer guzzlers

More information about P-CREW is available at https://pcrew.sierrainstitute.us/. Donations to support the program can be accepted online.
