New fire truck display unveiled at Williams House

The Portola Area Historical Society reports that it hosted an open house at the Williams House Museum May 17 to celebrate a new historical fire truck display building.

Members of the Beckwourth Peak Fire Protection District braved the weather — cloudy with rain and hail — and barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs for attendees.

After all were well fed, Leslie Chrysler, president of the historical society, formally dedicated the newly constructed fire truck display building to the city of Portola and presented a certificate to Mayor Jim Murphy. Following the ceremony, cake and champagne were served.

The historical society said it took on the building project after receiving a donation from the estate of Kathryn Hale. In 1982 the Portola City Council adopted Resolution No. 672 outlining the historical significance of Portola Fire Engine No. 2, a 1938 American LaFrance, and providing direction it be retained indefinitely for its “morale and historical value.” A copy of the resolution is displayed on the building.
