Plumas County Solid Waste announces that beginning June 6 the Chester Transfer Station will begin accepting qualifying mattress for recycling free of charge. Acceptable units must not be severely damaged or come from out of state.
This program comes through a partnership between Waste Management and the Mattress Recycling Council, a nonprofit stewardship organization. Other participating mattress recycling locations in and near Plumas County include Mountain Mattress in Quincy and the Loyalton Transfer Station. Only mattresses used and discarded in California are accepted by the program. Also accepted are futons with base detached, adjustable beds if covered with fabric and ticking, and all-foam mattresses.
The following items are not accepted for recycling:
- Mattresses with severe damage, heavy soiling or infestation
- Out-of-state mattresses
- Mattresses that have been stripped of padding components
- Pillows and cushions
- Fold-out sofa beds and futon frames or bases
- Loose mattress pads or toppers
- Loose bedding, blankets or sheets
- Water beds
- Fire-damaged mattresses
