Lassen Volcanic National Park reports that spring snow clearing operations are taking place between Bumpass Hell and Devastated Area. The main park road — Highway 89 — is closed to vehicles at Sulphur Works near the park’s southwest entrance and Devastated Area near the northwest entrance.
The road is open to pedestrian and bicycle use beyond the closures, and the road is cleared to Lassen Peak. Visitors are advised to watch for snow, ice and plowing operations. Everyone should stop and look before proceeding around plows, and stay at least 100 feet from all equipment.
The Bumpass Hell Trail is under a seasonal closure due to accumulated winter snow. This annual closure is in place to prevent injury from treacherous trail conditions near hydrothermal areas, said park personnel. The trail typically remains closed until early July. More details on trail status and conditions are available on the park’s website.
Juniper Lake Road is closed to vehicle traffic due to damage from the 2021 Dixie Fire. Work is in progress to reopen the road, which is closed to pedestrian traffic when covered with snow.
The park reports that some facilities, infrastructure and areas remain closed due to effects from the 2021 Dixie Fire. Personnel ask everyone to adhere to all closure signs. In reopened areas, hazards like fallen trees, loose/falling rock, undefined trails and hidden stump holes exist. More information about burned area safety is available online.
