Eastern Plumas Health Care Auxiliary, the organization that runs the Nifty Thrifty thrift store in Portola, is sponsoring a blood drive by Vitalant in Portola. It will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Church parish hall from noon to 6 p.m. Appointments are available and walk-ins are welcome.
According to Vitalant, volunteers need 25 more donors to give blood at this event. Vitalant urges all eligible donors to give this June to support patients whose illnesses and injuries don’t take a vacation.
Medical professionals often refer to the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day as trauma season because as outdoor activities increase, so can traumatic injuries. Fewer blood donors are available due to vacations and summer activities, but the need for blood is constant, say organizers.
