Park hosts traditional ecological knowledge plant walk

Plumas-Eureka State Park announces that this year’s Gold Discovery Day includes a unique and meaningful addition to the day’s festivities: a traditional ecological knowledge plant walk led by Maidu educator Dana Galloway. This interpretive hike will take place Saturday, July 19, from 9 to 10 a.m.

Organizers say the free family-friendly experience offers a deeper understanding of Indigenous history and ecological wisdom that predates the gold mining era and continues to shape the landscape to this day — and into the future: “Join us for this inspiring morning program that helps expand the story of Plumas-Eureka beyond gold to the enduring legacy of Indigenous land connection and stewardship.”

Dana Galloway is a tribal member of the Greenville and Mooretown rancherias and founder of the Yamani Maidu Cultural Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing Maidu language and culture through native plants, land stewardship and the arts.

During the walk, participants will learn about local plants through the lens of traditional ecological knowledge — a holistic understanding of the relationships between people, plants and place passed down through generations. The walk covers approximately 1.25 miles of flat terrain, making it accessible to families and visitors of all ages.

Organizers ask participants to bring water, sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes, a notebook and a smile.
