Portola literacy program welcomes students, seeks volunteers

Courses include GED prep, English language study and more

The Plumas County Literacy Program at Portola Library is accepting students and requesting volunteers.

The literacy program offers a variety of free tutoring services for adult learners. Adults can enroll and receive tutoring in reading and writing, as well as English lessons for non-native English speakers. The program also gives help with technology and provides support to individuals studying for the GED and Citizenship Test. Limited counseling in financial literacy is also offered.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the literacy program, said Plumas County Librarian Dora Mitchell. They support and execute the services offered. A variety of volunteer positions are possible. Principally, the literacy program is looking for volunteers to become tutors. Tutors will be paired with a learner. They will be provided with training and materials, and will receive constant support from literacy staff. No background in teaching or any related subject is required; only a willingness to learn and a desire to form a meaningful relationship with the learner they are paired with.

For more information, contact the program by email at [email protected] or by phone at 530-832-0522. The literacy program at Portola Library also periodically posts information on Plumas County Library’s Facebook page.
