Dramaworks and the West End Theatre announce auditions for the fall production of Tennessee Williams’ celebrated drama “The Glass Menagerie,” directed by Brianna Swofford and assistant director Scott Corey. Auditions will be held Aug. 18 and 19 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the rehearsal room at the West End Theatre in Quincy.
Swofford says this iconic memory play explores family, memory and illusion in 1930s America, offering actors the opportunity to engage deeply with poetic language and emotionally rich roles. Prepared monologues are recommended but not required for the auditions. Cold readings from the script will also be available.
Roles to be cast include
- Tom Wingfield, male, early to mid-20s: Amanda’s son and Laura’s younger brother. Tom is an aspiring poet working in a warehouse to support his family. He also serves as the narrator of the play, recounting his memories with both affection and regret. He feels trapped by his responsibilities and frequently escapes into movies, literature and drink.
- Laura Wingfield, female, mid-20s: Tom’s older sister. Laura is quiet, delicate and painfully shy, having largely withdrawn from the world. She walks with a limp from a childhood illness and spends her days listening to old records and tending her collection of glass figurines. Her inner life is rich, though rarely shared.
- Amanda Wingfield, female, 40s–60s: A former Southern belle, Amanda is proud, talkative and often overbearing. She is fiercely devoted to her children but lives in denial about their circumstances and retreats into memories of her genteel past.
- Jim O’Connor, male, 20s to mid-30s: A former high school hero who now works as a shipping clerk with Tom. Outgoing and optimistic, Jim is ambitious and driven by self-improvement. He represents a symbol of hope to Amanda and Laura, though reality proves more complicated.
The show will run Oct. 16 through 19 and 23 through 26.
