The Almanor Recreation and Park District offers a progress update on its Trails Around the Lake Project.
Organizers point out that progress on the Lake Almanor West segment of the regional trail plan is obvious to travelers on Highway 89. This new 3.8-mile trail begins at a trailhead just beyond the northwest end of the Lake Almanor Recreation Trail and follows the shoreline adjacent to Highway 89, where the diversion channel flows into the lake. ARPD said that once the trail is complete, staff will add interpretive and wayfinding signage, along with benches at scenic overlooks to enhance the experience for walkers and cyclists.
Meanwhile, the Almanor Rail Trail Project — First Avenue to A13 — is also moving forward, said ARPD. In April 2025, Lumos & Associates delivered a trail condition assessment to the district, detailing current conditions, recommendations and design standards. This work — funded through a Sierra Nevada Conservancy grant — provided the essential due diligence needed to prepare the trail for improvements, said ARPD.
The district points out that the biggest challenge is funding. Organizers are actively pursuing grants, but private donations are vital to helping reach the goals of this large, long-term project. “Together, we can make these trails a lasting community treasure!” say organizers. Those who would like to support the project can email [email protected] and a board member will reach out to them personally.

ARPD’s Trails Committee works with federal, private and commercial landowners to link trails around the Lake Almanor Basin that will provide healthy, outdoor recreational opportunities for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.
