National forest burn projects continue successfully

The Plumas National Forest provides an update on current and recent prescribed burning projects.

Beckwourth Ranger District

On Nov. 13, firefighters on the Beckwourth Ranger District treated approximately 5 acres of burn piles in Mohawk Valley west-southwest of Graeagle, near Johnsville and Plumas Pines. Previously, about 5 acres were treated Nov. 6. PNF said there was excellent consumption of fuels in the piles and they were expected to continue to burn down over the course of one day.

Smoke dispersal was good, said PNF, with some brief smoke impacts to Graeagle-Johnsville Road during ignitions.

Firefighters will be patrolling and monitoring the 10 acres of piles burned in the area through the weekend.

Mount Hough Ranger District

On Nov. 12, firefighters on the Mount Hough Ranger District found dryer fuel conditions than expected near Taylorsville. Pile burning operations in the area were postponed until conditions are more favorable. The test fire was secured, and firefighters will continue monitoring conditions.

On Nov. 7, firefighters successfully ignited approximately 31 acres of piles in Butterfly Valley. Conditions were good and everything burned down well. The piles ignited were secured for the night.

Smoke dispersal was excellent and there were minimal smoke impacts, said PNF.

On Nov. 6, firefighters successfully ignited a total of 48 acres of piles today at five locations on the ranger district: approximately 29 acres in the Spanish Ranch area north of Meadow Valley, approximately 15 acres in the Three Lakes Road area, approximately 2 acres near the intersection of Lookout Rock Road and Big Creek Road near Bucks Lake, approximately 1 acre at Greenville Campground and approximately 1 acre at Oakland Camp.

Overall conditions were great and piles burned down nicely at all locations, said PNF.

At the Lookout Rock Road location, there was a larger pile that burned over several days. Firefighters were in the area continuing to work on the pile and ensuring fuels were burned effectively to meet the prescription, said PNF.

Smoke dispersal at all locations was excellent. Firefighters worked on patrol and monitoring into last week for all six areas treated, approximately 79 acres combined.
