Auditions open for ‘Lend Me a Tenor’

Dramaworks announces that auditions for the upcoming comedy “Lend Me a Tenor” by Ken Ludwig will be held in the West End Theatre rehearsal hall at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 2, 3 and 4.

Edie O’Connor will be directing this production, which organizers describe as a fast-moving masterclass in farce.

Set in a Cleveland hotel suite in the 1930s, the play centers around the Cleveland Grand Opera Co.’s biggest night of the season — featuring the world-famous Italian tenor, Tito Merelli, in a performance of “Otello.” But when Merelli arrives late, accidentally overdoses, and is presumed dead just before curtain time, panic erupts.

Desperate to save the show, the opera manager’s timid assistant, Max, is thrust into the spotlight as a last-minute stand-in. But when Merelli unexpectedly wakes up, still ready to perform, the situation spirals into an outrageous series of miscommunications, romantic complications and frantic costume changes — with two Otellos, jealous lovers and clueless bystanders colliding in a whirlwind of comic confusion.

Brimming with razor-sharp dialogue, physical comedy and perfectly timed absurdity, “Lend Me a Tenor” a delightful tribute to the chaos of show business and the thin line between disaster and triumph — guaranteeing an evening of nonstop laughter, said dramaworks.

More information on auditions is available via [email protected] or 530-283-1956. The theatre is located at 541 Main St. in Quincy.
