Plumas County Democrats reports that members delivered a $500 donation to the Community Assistance Network food bank in Quincy last month.
“When we suggested raising money for our local food bank, our members really stepped up,” said Faith Strailey, chair of the Plumas County Democrats Central Committee. “It’s because of many individual donations that we were able to deliver this check to CAN.”
Secretary of the local Democrats group Julie Hochrein headed up the project and arranged to deliver the donation to Kitty Gay, CAN’s coordinator.
“This comes at a good time for us,” said Gay. “We’ve seen an increase in people needing help with food due to increasing prices. And we always have a greater need in the winter and particularly during the holidays.”
CAN was established in 1990, the brainchild of Faye Behrens who, upon retirement from the county auditor’s office, observed that there were no programs in Quincy to assist community members who were struggling. Local churches and community organizations got together to found CAN, and St. John’s Catholic Church offered a space from which the warehouse could operate and still does.
“It may be hard to believe in a community our size, but we have about 12,000 visits per year,” said Gay.
This is the fourth year that Hochrein has organized a donation drive for CAN. “We’re also collecting coats for the crisis center,” she said. “Plumas County Democrats are dedicated to supporting our community whenever we can.”
