Plumas Unified School District announces that it continues to face significant fiscal challenges that impact its ability to operate sustainably. These challenges include a structural deficit of $9.5 million, cash insolvency and the inability to meet the state-required reserve.
Under state legislation Assembly Bill 2756 and the direction of the state-appointed county administrator, PUSD is required to develop and implement a fiscal stabilization plan, said the district. This plan will outline the ongoing budget reductions and structural changes necessary to restore the district’s long-term fiscal health.
As part of a commitment to transparency and community engagement, PUSD will hold another round of community listening meetings in January 2026 in each community. During these meetings, the district will share information about the fiscal stabilization plan and provide opportunities for community input.
PUSD leadership aims for the meetings to help county residents understand the facts and direction of the district’s financial situation more clearly. “We really encourage our families and communities to attend, listen and ask questions,” said Rich DuVarney, the state-appointed administrator. “Education budgets in particular are complicated, so we want to make sure that our stakeholders feel that we’ve provided them enough information for a general understanding, with resources to learn more if they want to.”
Community listening meeting schedule
All community listening meetings will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will be livestreamed on the PCOE/PUSD YouTube channel for those who wish to listen in remotely. Streaming goes live when the meeting starts.
- The Portola meeting is set for Jan. 6, 2026, at Portola Junior-Senior High School.

PUSD wants to hear from the community, said organizers: “Your questions, concerns and ideas are vital as the district works toward a stable financial future for PUSD.” Those unable to attend a meeting or who would like to share feedback at any time can email DuVarney at [email protected].
