Quincy Crazy Quilters host tea and show May 18

Crazy About Quilts, hosted by Quincy Crazy Quilters, is set for Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the first time since COVID, organizers report, the local quilt guild’s popular show and tea is returning to the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds. In addition to viewing of quilts large and small, admission includes a hosted tea and an opportunity to enter drawings for a variety of gift baskets and the guild’s annual quilt giveaway.

The show opens at 10 a.m. in the Tulsa Scott building at Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds. Adult admission is $10 and children aged 6 – 12 cost $5. The hosted tea is included in the admission and consists of tea sandwiches, sweet and savory finger foods, and, of course, tea. For more information, contact Carolyn Kenney at 530-394-7526 or Mona Hill at 775-530-1386.

Featured quilter

Organizers report that Bernita Miller, the show’s featured quilter, will display her appealingly whimsical quilts and answer questions about her work and the art of quilting. Miller says her great-grandmother inspired her to take up quilting. From a young age, she admired her great-grandmother’s quilts and decided that she would become a quilter one day.

After the birth of her oldest child, Miller made her first quilt with a kit ordered from a craft company. When she found a quilt shop 30 miles from home, she began taking classes and her quilting career was well and truly launched. Using the techniques she learned in class, she says, “I began making quilts the ‘right way.’”

Miller said she loves to browse quilt patterns. Some excite her, but often she chooses a pattern with a family member or friend in mind. “From finding the pattern, choosing the fabric, piecing the quilt, and hand-quilting it together with love, I think of that person and hope they will love the quilt as much as I loved making it,” Miller says. She spends a lot of time thinking about the color palette to be sure the finished quilt fits comfortably into the recipient’s home.

Despite her years of experience, Miller says she still faces challenges, particularly with modern quilt designs. “I have a hard time trusting myself to choose the right fabrics and combinations for modern quilts. Once I get started and see that things are going together nicely, I enjoy the process and am often very pleased with the outcome.”

About Quincy Crazy Quilters

The Quincy Crazy Quilters Guild promotes the art of quilting, a uniquely American handicraft, to preserve quilt-making for future generations. The guild offers classes for members and the community throughout the year.

Each year, members assist the Plumas-Sierra County Fair with hanging the quilt entries in the Tulsa Scott building. This event includes an annual drawing for a quilt. Guild members report they have made and donated more than 1,000 quilts to local aid organizations for people facing life’s challenge.

The guild meets at 6 p.m. every third Thursday at the Bunkhouse at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds in Quincy. Visitors are welcome; contact guild president Sandy Simmons at 925-330-8018 or membership chair Sally Nichol at 530-283-2688 for more information.
