Soroptimists honor Anna Mercer, Macy Peay

At their May lunch meeting, members of Soroptimist International of Quincy congratulated Soropti-students Anna Mercer and Macy Peay. The Quincy Junior-Senior High School seniors were honored for their outstanding academics, leadership, activities and community service.

Anna Mercer

Anna Mercer was a member of the California Scholarship Federation, Upward Bound and Peer Education. She was a cheerleader all four years of high school and captain in her senior year. Especially meaningful to Anna was the Quincy High Book Club, where she explored her passion for books, reading and writing.

Mercer was a sixth-grade counselor in the outdoor education program, teaching students about their environment. She also participated in assemblies at the elementary school to promote mental health/bullying prevention awareness. She was a volunteer in the special education classroom.

Her senior project was a fundraiser for the special education department, resulting in new tools for the students, the creation of a food pantry, the purchase of a microwave, and funding for a field trip for the students at the end of the year.

Mercer plans to attend the University of Montana in Missoula. She commented, “I will get my bachelor’s degree in human services/social work and continue doing what I love by working and advocating for youth. I plan to get a teaching credential in special education and attend graduate school.”

Macy Peay

Macy Peay was honored for her leadership roles including associated student body president, district board student representative, School Site Council president and California Scholarship Federation president. She was the recipient of the Gold Honor Roll award for academic excellence. Peay received the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and the Principal’s Award.

As a member of the S-Club, Peay volunteered for many community service projects. Athletics was an important part of her high school life: she was a member of the basketball, volleyball, softball and golf teams. She received the California Interscholastic Federation Spirit Award.

Peay’s senior project, focusing on spreading awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence, was coordinated with the California Highway Patrol’s Every 15 Minutes program. On May 15 and 16, Every 15 Minutes demonstrated to Quincy High students the impact drinking and driving has on friends, families and the community.

Peay will attend San Diego State University, majoring in biology and premedical studies.
