As the academic year draws to a close, Plumas Charter School’s Chester Learning Center brought together students, families and educators for an end-of-year barbecue celebration. Held May 14, the event offered a display of community spirit, student leadership and shared success, report organizers.
The festivities kicked off with the presence of Kona Ice, serving up snow cones during the sunny afternoon. Families gathered to participate in a face-painting station and yard games, while sharing food offerings and conversation.
At the heart of the celebration was eighth grader Gwen Graham, a student whose dedication to community involvement shone brightly, said Plumas Charter School. Graham spearheaded the planning and organization of the event, listening to her peers’ interests and desires to ensure a memorable experience for all. Organizers say her leadership and initiative were instrumental in bringing the event to fruition. Graham also set up a family photo booth with her Polaroid camera.
The support of Chester Learning Center teachers underscored the sense of unity and school spirit, organizers reported. Plumas Charter’s executive director, Taletha Washburn, and community resource coordinator, Rhonda Wayson, were also in attendance. The two spent the afternoon engaging with families and providing information about the community-schools grant and opportunities for parental involvement.
“The end-of-year barbecue was not just a celebration, it was a reflection of the school’s commitment to holistic education experiences and fostering strong bonds between educators, students and families,” said Rachel Goings, Plumas Charter School’s public relations specialist.
